The Religious Candidate Playbook

Every four years across Baltimore County, crooked politicians undergo a miraculous spiritual awakening right before the candidate filing deadline at the Board of Elections in Hunt Valley. They dust off their suits, hire photographers and plant themselves in church pews, synagogue services and prayer halls. They flash wide smiles, shake hands with the clergy and demand unquestioned loyalty from the congregation. They treat holy ground like cheap Kevlar to shield their secular records.
The Tanakh shreds that hustle before the politician can even sit down. Proverbs 16:11 states plainly: “Honest scales and balances belong to the Lord; all the weights in the bag are of his making.” In Baltimore County, those weights get rigged every single budget cycle. The Department of Public Works and Transportation doles out millions in road-paving and infrastructure accounts, while favored commercial developers pocket lucrative zoning variances. Proverbs 11:3 warns that “the integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.” When a county politician rigs the ledger for campaign donors, scripture calls it treachery.
The New Testament brings the hammer down on officials who substitute empty piety for basic honesty. James 1:26 declares: “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.”
That verse lands right on the desk of every local council member who weaponizes faith when Inspector General investigations drop. When an independent audit flags shredded receipts or backroom deals, the politician cries persecution and wraps their office in church rhetoric. Ephesians 4:25 demands that believers put away falsehood and speak the truth. Hiding behind a pulpit while running out the 30-day clock on a Maryland Public Information Act request violates the very gospel they quote on the campaign trail.
The Quran eliminates every excuse for public figures who dodge accountability and lie to their constituents. Surah An-Nisa (4:135) commands: “Stand firmly for justice as witnesses to God, even if it’s against yourselves.” Surah Al-Baqarah (2:42) orders believers: “Do not mix truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know it.” That command applies directly to an elected official who ducks a process server at home, gets caught on camera on the sidewalk or a parking lot and runs straight to social media to lie about the encounter. Running away from a civil court summons and bearing false witness online violates the core principles of every major faith on earth.
Leviticus 19:11 makes deceit a big no-no in the Torah: “You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another.” Just because the internet wasn’t around when all these religious books were written, that doesn’t mean the rules don’t apply to internet scripture.
Working-class residents across Baltimore County and all of Maryland for that matter sweat and ache every day to earn money, pay their property taxes and support their local congregations. Faith demands righteousness, honest “weights” and transparent dealing. It gives zero legal or moral immunity to politicians who violate the Baltimore County Charter and break state laws. Hand these officials their own holy books, demand the public receipts and stop letting corrupt politicians use sacred ground to run from the truth!
