No Wonder He’s Been Hiding His Military Record – OP-ED
The following is an op-ed submitted by a candidate for office. The views expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the positions of The Baltimore Informer. All candidates of local interest to Baltimore County are invited to submit their own perspectives for consideration.
Op-Ed By: John Myrick, Republican Candidate for Governor of Maryland
One of the greatest honors of my life was serving Maryland and the nation in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. As a decorated combat Veteran, having retired after nearly 23 years of service, I place a very high value on integrity, leadership and sacrifice. I am proud of my military career, and have authorized the release of my complete service record to any authorized media outlet. I have nothing to hide. Our current Governor has been asked to do the same since he was a Candidate for Governor in 2022. To date, he has refused to do so. Why? What is he hiding? It appears that we are finding out through the efforts of dedicated members of the press — and those facts are disturbing and paint a picture of a self-serving opportunist, not that of a patriot.
The 03 May 2026 Baltimore Sun front-page banner headline article (Moore Army Records Show Training Delays, Gaps) highlights a very disturbing pattern that extends far beyond his military service. The article proves that our current Governor has made a lifetime habit of coasting off taxpayer money, lying and failing to complete even the most basic tasks — all while advancing his own personal agenda. No wonder he has been unwilling to release his full military record.
His records (of what anyone has been able to gather) show a pattern of disregarding rules, regulations and procedures; as well as a lack of achievement. It took him a full year longer to receive his Baccalaureate degree than normal and, more importantly, 12 months longer than Amry Regulations allow. He then disregarded Regulations and, more importantly, Orders, and went to Oxford to pursue a Masters degree — taking 4 years to complete the 2-year coursework and NEVER having the degree conferred. He failed to complete the required thesis; again, showing a lack of achievement. All this while completely disregarding U.S. Army Regulations and, according the U.S. Army, never requesting a waiver for any of these required timelines. It’s also noteworthy that he could not have accomplished any of his required participation with his Army Reserve unit while abroad in the United Kingdom for those 4 years — which is grounds for discharge from military service for failure to perform. Reserve Members are typically required to complete 48 drill periods and 11-14 days of Annual Training each year with your unit. There’s no indication that he completed any of these.
And then there’s the issue of his failure to attend the Officers Basic Course — a requirement for commissioning — for 7 YEARS after his original commissioning date. Again, U.S. Army Regulations clearly state that this training must be accomplished no later than 36 months of initial commissioning. These same Regulations prohibit any delays in completing the Officers Basic Course for pursuit of a Graduate degree. Of note, it’s also interesting that he was actually PROMOTED from Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant WITHOUT having attended and completed the Officers Basic Course. The general requirements for what’s considered “Time in Grade” promotions (like Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant) are: 1) Time in Service; 2) Time in Grade; 3) Satisfactory Participation (Army Regulation 135-155 and Army Regulation 600-8-29). How on earth was this allowed? Since when does the Army reward personnel for failing to complete required training and for disregarding Orders, Regulations and Directives? Perhaps someone at the Department of War (Defense) should answer these questions? Inquiring American taxpayers would like to know.
Wes Moore’s lifetime record of coasting off taxpayer funding; disregarding rules, regulations and procedures; and making a half-hearted effort at everything he has ever attempted; all while building his political career; should sound familiar to Marylanders. Zero accountability. Zero integrity. Zero honesty. Zero positive results — except for his own self gain. Just look at the train-wreck of his term as Governor. Marylanders are paying the price every single day for his well-groomed, well-planned charade.
He’s no public servant. He clearly has never had a servant’s heart — it’s all been for and about him. Integrity matters. Leadership matters. It’s clear that Wes Moore lacks both.
Maryland deserves better.
